Kate Childs is thrilled to be transitioning from assistant coach to head coach in her third year at her alma mater, and continuing to teach math in the district as well. As a student-athlete at LOHS, Kate was a two sport athlete, participating in both the softball and basketball programs. She was a four-year letter winner in softball, and a three-year letter winner in basketball, captaining both teams her senior year. She was recognized as the senior female athlete of the year, and also awarded the Jim Putnam Athletic Award and Les Darby athletic scholarship upon graduation in 2009.
After high school, Kate went on to play basketball at Maryville University, a Division II school in St. Louis, MO, on both athletic and academic scholarships. She was a captain for two years and helped lead the team to a Conference Championship her junior year and then a Division Championship her senior year. The 2011-2012 basketball team (junior year of college) was inducted into the Maryville Hall of Fame in October 2018.
Kate is thankful for all of her great experiences playing basketball in high school and college, and appreciates the opportunity to support young athletes and continue to be around the sport she loves. As a coach, she emphasizes enthusiasm, communication, and fundamentals. Her hope is that as each student-athlete grows on and off the court, the program can continue to grow as a source of pride for each individual involved. Kate is proud to be a part of the coaching staff, and proud to be a Laker.
