I hope everyone is having a great week and you and your families are staying healthy as we close-in on the start of the school year. Thank you for your continued patience as we continue to navigate these difficult times.
We are disappointed to announce that after careful consideration of many factors, LOSD has decided to suspend district-sponsored athletic activities and conditioning, effective Monday, August 31, 2020. This was yet another difficult decision that we wish we didn’t have to make. The most recent ODE health metrics require a significant improvement in COVID-19 cases in our county before bringing people together in our schools and facilities. LOSD is also committed to doing its part to help reduce the spread of infection so that students may return to in-person instruction as soon as possible. Reaching ODE’s metrics to allow in-person instruction onsite will require diligent effort on the part of all of us. Reaching that goal will also create the best conditions that will allow the resumption of full secondary athletic programming.
The metrics require that we have no COVID-19 cases among staff or students in order to offer 1:1 or small group instruction in our schools. We and our community would be very disappointed if we were not allowed to have this limited on-site instruction because we had a COVID case from students being engaged in district-sponsored sports activities that would disqualify us from meeting the metrics. LOSD’s decision is in alignment with other school districts in Clackamas and Washington counties.
Reducing community spread is the key to being back in our schools, participating in activities and playing sports. You can do your part by wearing your mask, washing your hands and watching your distance. Again, thank you for your continued patience and support of Lake Oswego Athletics.
